How to Write a College Application Essay That Will Book You a Place

college application essay guide

Every college considers a college application essay a very important item in their student admission processes.  If you are making an application to a college and you write a shoddy college application essay, you will most likely be rejected during the selection process, no matter your performance in other areas.  Students with marginal scores can be selected to their dream schools if they write exceptional college application essays.  Here are some points to guide you in writing a winning college application essay.

Do not make lists

What would be the first thing you would not miss to include in a college application essay?  Achievements and accomplishments, right?  The most common mistake made by college applicants is turning the college application essay into an achievements and accomplishments list.  Tell a compelling story with a clear focus in your passions and ambitions.  Concentrate in your future rather than the past.

Add a touch of humor

A college application essay that is dead boring to read will not pass the taste simply because the reader has many other essays to read.  Lighten up the essay with appropriate humor and well placed criticism but be careful not to over indulge in it.

Tone of the essay

The overall tone of your essay is vital.  Since you will have a limited number of words to right, be sure to get the right tone from the start of the college application essay.  Strike a balance between pride and humility, but do not boast or whine throughout the essay.

Expose your real character

The primary objective of the college application essay is to judge applicants’ characters.  Your character and personality will be presented well in your essay.  The essay is the most illuminated way to read someone’s character and if you do not reveal yours, then there will be no basis to judge you.
