Evidence-based practice is one of the foundation of the research in nursing. Consequently, it is essential to prepare students for taking their duties seriously and encourage the development of critical thinking and ability to look at the necessity for the research from the critical perspective (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2014). Clearly defining research and evidence-based practice in nursing will increase the understanding of the required actions and necessity in usage of analytical instruments for critical thinking. A primary goal of this essay is to provide sufficient description of research and evidence-based practice in nursing with the assistance of one sample research question and one clinical question. In the end, the conclusions are drawn to summarize the main findings of the essay.
The research can be defined as a necessary critical analysis and exploration, which is targeted at finding a clear description of a particular nursing question or singularity (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2014). It could be said that systematization of the research contributed to the development and the improvement of the medicine (Jones, 2014). Nonetheless, it is apparent that the research has to be analyzed and systematized to acquire relevant outcomes. Firstly, the topic has to be discussed, coherent research and clinical questions have to be developed. The fundamental goal of the research question is to display the main idea and find the answer to the research topic. One of the examples of the research question is ‘What is relationship among anger, cardiovascular risk issues, and gastrointestinal symptoms?’ (Park et al., 2015). As for the clinical question, it has to have particular parts such as population, intervention, comparison intervention, and outcome (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2014). Consequently, as sample clinical question can be formulated as “In patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity, is bariatric surgery more effective than standard medical therapy at increasing the probability of remission of diabetes?”(Duke University Medical Center, 2015, para. 4). It is apparent that the following question is constructed according to the PICO format and covers all the necessary factors.
It is superficial that evidence-based practice has a vehement connection with the project research, as sufficient medical data has to be based on relevant outcomes and findings. The primary goal of evidence-based practice is to apply knowledge and information acquired from the academic literature into practice to enhance the condition of the patients (UNC Health Sciences Library, 2015). It is clear that this skill requires continuous development and evolves over time. In this case, the sample research question can be formulated, as ‘Are there any “follow-ups for improving psychological well-being for women after miscarriage?” (Murphy, Lipp, & Powles, 2012, p. 535). As for the clinical question, it can be described as following ‘For women, who experienced miscarriage, is active intervention (counselling) more efficient than passive one (electronic information) at decreasing the psychological difficulties after miscarriage?’ (Murphy, Lipp, & Powles, 2012). It is apparent that clinical question includes all the necessary aspects of the PICO model.
In conclusion, it could be said that the researcher has to be able to conduct the research and utilize the evidence-based practice, as these skills will help determine the effective intervention to improve the condition of the patients. Moreover, posing relevant and sufficient research and clinical questions is also essentiality, as the outcomes depend on the specifics of the chosen research topic. Nonetheless, it is apparent that a nurse has to be able to analyze the consequences and outcomes critically to find an appropriate solution to the question.
