Participants in the research study
The participants in this study included students from different grades and their teachers. Researchers like Fernandez, Massey, Dornbush, Shaughnessy, and Haladyna were also implicated in the survey.
Summary of the methodology, procedures, and instruments used
During the research, learning variables and information from teachers were used to provide viable information concerning the students’ attitude towards social studies. Previous research results were also used in the analysis. Additionally, formulated series of research questions also formed part of this study. During the interview, students were asked different questions regarding their attitude on social studies.
Data analysis procedures
After collecting data from different respondents, a comprehensive analysis was executed. Critically, two main theses were developed. The first thesis proposed that students had a positive attitude towards social studies. They were the only group actively involved in their studies. Moreover, the teacher’s enthusiasm also led to a positive response. The second thesis proposed that the presence or lack of observable practical values was the main contributing factor to the student’s negative perception of social studies.
Adequacy of the analysis
The analysis of the study was sufficient since the researchers were able to obtain first-hand information from the affected students. Students were able to give their experiences concerning social studies. Thus, the information obtained by the researchers was accurate in regard to analysis.
Description of the results of the study
Results of the study indicate that the students’ views on social studies had greatly improved due to the continuous changes made in the teaching programs. Additionally, improved systems of solving teaching problems and administrative practices were believed to have contributed to the positive attitude. Conversely, a number of students were still having a negative perception of social studies. Most of them based their views on the irrelevancy of the subject. Besides, some students had taken the social study classes to be dull and boring.
Another research carried out in San Francisco’s public institutions indicated that students from grades 9-12 did not regard social studies as a vital subject. In fact, they valued English and mathematics comparatively. The students portrayed social studies as a mystifying subject that is incongruent with their future dreams and academic expectations. Critically, interviews carried out in Midwest schools showed that teachers play important roles in determining the outlook of social studies.
Adequacy of the results of the study
Agreeably, the results obtained were adequate since improved systems of solving teachers’ problems were interesting to the students. Additionally, negative perceptions are experienced because the education system has not adopted an appropriate way of addressing the current issues in social studies.
Conclusions of the research study
Conclusively, the number of students who had a bad attitude towards social studies was moderate. This was contrary to the results of the previous research studies. The other research concluded that the student’s attitude towards social studies is determined by their teacher’s level of commitment.
Adequacy of the conclusions based on the analysis and the results
Based on the analysis and results, the conclusions are sufficiently viable since improved changes in the education system and teaching methodology had improved the students’ views on social studies. Besides, the quality of presentation and adequacy of the lecture notes greatly determined whether the students would negatively or positively perceive social studies.
